FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Expanding services in a much-needed area of Monterey County

Salinas, CA (September 1, 2020)  In the first phase of its long-anticipated service expansion into the King City Sober Living Environment (SLE), Sun Street Centers is proud to announce that the property at 119 S. Mildred Avenue has been prepared for its new SLE house. The existing structure was razed last Wednesday, August 5th, thus paving the way for the placement of the new prefabricated building, designed to house four men and four women up to 90 days each as they transition from their residential treatment into independent living and their new sober lifestyle. Most of these clients would be homeless after completion of residential treatment; the SLE will offer them the aftercare that is a critical component of ensuring long-term abstinence. They will be able to securely work to rebuild their lives with the guidance of Sun Street Centers partner’s providing housing and employment resources. Residents will pay their own way in the apartments, and share values of sobriety, cooperation, cleanliness, and safety.

The demolition and foundation were funded by a grant from the John and Annette Romans Family Fund of the Community Foundation for Monterey County in March. Our dedicated South County committee, consisting of Susan Childers (Chair), Janet Buttgereit, Karen Fanoe, Mary Orradre, Arlene Dedini, Dee Acosta, Thricia Whited, and CEO, Anna Foglia, is very pleased with the progress of the project and is looking forward to its completion in December of 2020. Committee member Janet Buttgereit stated, “This SLE is what men and women battling substance abuse need, a good safe start at sobriety. I am so excited to have completed this first phase.”

As the committee remains sensitive to the current state this country is in, they will only encourage the community to give to this project if they are able. “This committee never ceases to amaze me with how well they understand their entire community and the needs of the residents.” says, Anna Foglia. The committee offers private tours to people who want to invest in Sun Street Centers’ mission in King City, CA. We’ve had several key donors who are not new to contributing to Sun Street Centers success across all programs in Monterey and San Benito Counties.

Louis and Roberta Huntington reached out to Sun Street Centers when they heard the need and have ensured this project escalates into the final phase with their substantial gift of $250,000. This life changing gift will go towards the purchase of the prefab SLE home. In addition to this wonderful news from last week, this week Taylor Farms agreed to donate another generous amount of $100,000. The donation from Taylor Farms will help this project with the foundation, installation and finishes. We would also like to acknowledge the Carmel Rotary Fund of the Community Foundation of Monterey with their meaningful gift of $15,000. Anna Foglia states “These gifts will truly save lives, diverting people from becoming homeless in South County.”

We are still soliciting gifts to complete the campus on Broadway which will provide the youth with pro-social activities, storage, and a recreational room for our residents. For more information on how we can help you or how you can support our mission please visit:
