Expectant and New Mothers at PDM Family Recovery Community Receive ‘Shower of Love’
Salinas, CA (November 30, 2017) – Sun Street Centers today announced their partnership with the the Christ Child Society of Monterey Bay. As part of this partnership, the Christ Child Society, whose tagline is, “where love leads to action”, will be hosting an event on Saturday, December 2nd called the “Shower of Love”. The event, held at the Carmel Mission at 3080 Rio Road in Carmel from 10:00am-12:00pm, will be a free community event to assemble bundles of baby items for the women in need at Pueblo del Mar Family Recovery Community.
Pueblo del Mar is a partnership between Sun Street Centers and the County of Monterey Housing Authority. The Family Recovery Center, run by Sun Street Centers, operates on property owned by the Housing Authority. The program is the first of its kind in Monterey County, giving homeless families who have completed a residential recovery program, or who can document they have participated in a 12-step Sobriety Program for at least three months, the opportunity for a new start. The facility served 144 people last year, including men, women and their children. Among the current residents are 86 children, ranging from infants to teens.
The baby bundles to be assembled will include items such as hand-sewn blankets and beanies, layettes, diapers, rattles, and other items that an expectant or new mother would ordinarily receive at a baby shower thrown by friends and family.
Marilyn Anderson, Program Director of Family Services at Sun Street Centers, had this to say, “Many of our residents at Pueblo del Mar Family Recovery Community are single parents. All are in recovery and it’s often a struggle to provide basic necessities, and National Christ Child Society helps make this possible. Not only does the National Christ Child Society make the residents happy, they make the world a happier place!”
Sun Street Centers, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2018, now offers addiction recovery programs in three counties. In addition to the Pueblo del Mar Family Recovery Community, programs include men’s and women’s residential treatment facilities, sober living environments, DUI and outpatient programs, prevention services and a brand-new sobering center.
