A Year Later – 87 SLO Residents Get Help for Addiction

San Luis Obispo, CA. August 21, 2023

There were 71 deaths from opioids in San Luis Obispo County in 2021 compared with Monterey
County which had only 27 that year. In response, nonprofit SUN STREET CENTERS opened a
residential recovery program on August 16, 2022. Now, one year later, 87 SLO residents have
been through the program.

The program serves adult males who acknowledge they have a serious substance use illness. Sun
Street Centers’ state-licensed, CARF-accredited facility on Prado Road, provides room, board
and treatment for 90 days. The strategy for participant care is to provide non-judgmental
treatment away from people and locations that trigger substance abuse, with others who have a
shared history.

“Our goal for the SLO Residential Program is to build a foundation for individuals who have
drug and alcohol addictions to sustain sober, healthy, and productive lives,” said Anna Foglia,
CEO of Sun Street Centers.

Addiction is a chronic disease, precipitated within the family and community, not solely at the
individual level. Sun Street Centers uses a social model strategy to adapt the environment around
a person to prevent, reduce, and eliminate behavior that is dangerous or unhealthy to community
members. Residents participate in a broad range of activities including Matrix Institute of
Addiction Education Classes, designed to give them knowledge, structure, and support they need
to achieve abstinence from drugs and alcohol. Core topics include early recovery skills, relapse
prevention, and family education.

“If you believe you might have a substance abuse issue and are looking for help, my staff and I
are dedicated to helping anyone seeking recovery find a new way of life. Showing others
recovery is possible and helping them rebuild their lives is our passion and mission,” said
Amanda Torrente, Director of Men’s Residential Recovery Services for San Luis Obispo.
