Fort Ord Dunes State Park, CA

The 1st Annual Recovery Run, presented this year by Sun Street Centers, on Saturday, March 7th at the Ford Ord Dunes, State Park Marina CA was a huge success!
290 walkers, runners, families and supporters came from the surrounding communities to CELEBRATE the people who have found the courage to break the cycle of addiction.
65 local volunteers helped with the planning and activities for the event.

The goal of the event was to encourage healthy lifestyles while helping to end the stigma of addiction and to highlight successful community members in long-term recovery from addiction. Our family-friendly event focused on addiction education, treatment and recovery. The $25,000 raised from the event supports Sun Street Centers, Safe Teen Empowerment Project (STEPS) after school program in Seaside, Salinas and Soledad.

Sun Street Centers’ Safe Teens Empowerment Project is a drug and alcohol abuse prevention, peer mentoring, after-school program of students and community service volunteers. STEPS is led by staff and student council leaders representing local high schools. They focus on developing environmental policies, and prevention strategies using a multifaceted approach that combines community education, and action, enforcement, and media advocacy. They provide education to middle school students and parents.

Mr. Roberto Perez Garcia, Recovery Honoree, more commonly known in our community as “Roberto from Sun Street” attended with his family. He was CELEBRATING his 20 years of sobriety and was greeted by many past or current alumni who are grateful for his dedication and service. At 77 years young, Roberto is always ready and willing to extend his hand to the newcomer’s in AA and NA, still making time to spend with those who suffer from alcohol or drug addiction.
