Sun Street Centers teams up once again with Salinas Girls Fastpitch to haunt Monterey County inside the Castle of the Dead, located at the Storm House, 185 Maryal Drive, next to the new Rabobank Stadium. The Castle of the Dead runs from Saturday, Oct. 26 to Thursday, Oct. 31 and promises to be 6,000 sq. ft. of one scary encounter after another. It’s intended for visitors 10 and older.

Sun Street Centers’ STEPS (Safe Teens Empowerment Program in Salinas, Peninsula and South County) and Salinas Girls Fastpitch will work together to create it. A Pumpkin Patch, for those who will not dare enter the Castle, has games and activities for family members. This year, the house will be haunted by Edgar Allen Poe, his dead wife, Lenore, and, of course, The Raven. (Make the connection? Baltimore Ravens vs. San Francisco 49-ers? Nevermore!)

This year’s house will be built between Oct. 18 and 20 with manpower provided by the current residents at Sun Street Centers men’s facility. They will be joined by the C Company 229th Military Intelligence Battalion.

The house will be staffed with more than 120 teens from all Salinas area high schools and members of CSUMB’s Rotaract Club (the College Rotary club).

Visitors will go from a haunted forest, to Edgar Allan Poe’s library, to the Castle kitchen and beyond for spooky tales, hair raising chills, and a maze filled with creatures of all kinds.

The house will be open: 4-10 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 26; 4-9 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 27; 7-10 p.m., Monday to Thursday, Oct. 28-31.

Tickets are $10. For more info: Contact Sheryl Merrill at 831-753-5144 or 831-809-4229 or visit and follow the link to the Castle of the Dead.
