Sun Street Centers Celebrates Recovery Happens Month
Sun Street Centers began a month long celebration of Recovery from Alcohol and Drug addiction on the State Capital yesterday, along with thousands of others from across California. Every September is Recovery Happens Month, A National declaration that people do recover from addiction and lead productive lives. Thousands of people were on the steps of the capital yesterday cheering for recovery, including Governor Schwarzenegger, who conducted a press conference. Afterwards, several men from Sun Street Centers were able to personally shake the governor’s hand. One resident said “It was a real thrill”, “I never expected to get that close to him”, all I could think of to say was “recovery does happen!”
Other events that Sun Street Centers will be participating in this month are City Council Recovery Happens Month proclamations scheduled for Sept 1 in Pacific Grove, Sept 16 in Seaside and Sept 21 in Salinas. On Sept 15 from 12pm-2pm Sun Street Centers, along with other local organizations will be conducting the annual “Lunch at the Train Station”. A free lunch to celebrate people in recovery from substance abuse along with treatment professionals who have helped them reclaim their lives! This is located at the Salinas Train Station parking Lot, 11 Railroad Ave. in Salinas. Free HIV Testing, Mobile Clinic and substance abuse information and referral will be part of this celebration.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and American Society of Addiction Medicine estimate that 10% of the population suffer from alcoholism alone (not including other drugs); that is 3.6 million people in the State of California.
